From USD 826 pp sharing
Zanzibar – Zanzibar (Mobile)
Daily Departures (subject to availability)

Itinerary Summary:
Day 1-5: Zanzibar

Highlights
Explore the exotic spice island of Zanzibar in your own time
Choose from the many activities this beautiful island has on offer like snorkelling and scuba diving off Chumbe Island, the Mnemba Atoll and Misali Island, spice tours with a visit to Kidichi Persian Baths, prison island tours with snorkelling and feeding a colony of giant tortoises, colobus monkey tours in the Jozani forest, sunset dhow cruises or visit the “Beit al-Ajaib” - House of Wonders National Museum in Stone Town
Recommendation: Forodhani Gardens – for all its refined restaurants, the best place for eating out in Stone Town is the open-air street food market held in the waterfront at Forodhani Gardens every day after sunset. It combines a magical twilight atmosphere with a variety and quality of food to put many a five-star hotel to shame. It is also one of the cheapest places to eat, where a couple of thousand shillings will leave you well and truly fed. Every evening fifty or sixty mama and baba lisha set up trestle tables, charcoal stoves (jikos), gas lanterns and home-made kibatari oil lamps and prepare the food. The choice is regal, ranging from seafood caught that morning and sauced with local spices, to goat meat served with superb homemade chilli sauce (pilipili hoho). The market is also a great place to try “Zanzibari pizzas” (mantabali), which is actually chapatti stuffed with egg, cheese or whatever takes the cook’s fancy, and resemble fat spring rolls. Other snacks worth sampling include spiced naan bread and andazi doughnuts, grilled cassava (muhogo), fried potato and meat or vegetable balls (katlesi or kachori), samosas (sambusa) filled with meat or vegetables and salads. You can even get grilled bananas topped with melted chocolate. Drinks are abundant too with sodas, freshly pressed seasonal juices, gently spiced zamzam tea, Turkish coffee, coconut milk (dafu), tamarind juice (mkwaju) and freshly pressed sugar cane juice all available.
